AI doesn't just consume data. It consumes the planet.
We're told AI is weightless — clever code living somewhere in the cloud. It isn't. Behind every answer sits a vast physical machine: data centres the size of towns, drinking power and fresh water, built on metals torn from the earth. The convenience is real. So is the cost — and almost no one is being honest about it.
Massive energy use. AI data centres consume many times the energy of traditional computing, and demand is rising fast. By 2030, the electricity drawn by data centres is projected to rival that of entire nations.
Water depletion. Millions of litres of fresh water are used to cool the servers behind AI. By 2030, data-centre water use is projected to reach the scale of more than a billion people's needs.
Resource extraction. The chips and hardware depend on rare-earth mining that scars ecosystems and displaces communities across the globe.
Carbon emissions. The carbon cost of AI is real and rising fast. A 2025 study by Allianz Trade estimated data centres emitted around 300 million tonnes of CO₂ that year — 57% higher than the International Energy Agency's own estimate. Without moves to decarbonise power grids, data-centre emissions are set to more than double by 2030. The training of a single large AI model shows the scale up close: GPT-3's training alone emitted an estimated 588 tonnes of CO₂, and larger models far more. And the growth is relentless — the current rate of AI expansion is projected to add 24 to 44 million tonnes of CO₂ to the atmosphere every year by 2030, the equivalent of putting 5 to 10 million extra cars on the road - every year.
E-waste. The hardware behind AI ages out fast, and it becomes the fastest-growing waste stream on earth. The world generated a record 62 million tonnes of electronic waste in 2022 — on track to reach 82 million tonnes by 2030. Barely any of it is dealt with properly: only about 22% is formally collected and recycled, meaning the vast majority is landfilled, burned or dumped. And this is not inert rubbish. E-waste is laced with mercury, cadmium and lead — substances that damage the kidneys, the nervous system and the developing brain. Left in the ground, those toxins leach out: e-waste in landfill is linked to as much as 20% of the world's groundwater contamination. So the same industry that drains fresh water to cool its machines poisons more of it with their remains — a slow toll paid downstream, by everyone, for years.
Innovation without accountability is just another form of destruction.
