The companies building the most energy-hungry infrastructure in human history are announcing net-zero commitments. The gap between what is being said and what is actually happening is extraordinary.
Data centres consumed 415 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2024. By 2030 that doubles to 945 — more than Japan's entire annual consumption. AI is the primary driver. To meet that demand, coal and gas plants are being kept alive.
The carbon footprint of AI systems alone reached between 32 and 79 million tonnes of CO₂ in 2025 — comparable to New York City's total annual emissions. Google's own emissions rose 13% in a single year.
A single large data centre drinks 5 million gallons of water per day. That water is evaporated and gone. The communities around these facilities bear the cost. In 2025, communities worldwide moved to block data centre projects worth USD $156 billion.
